(I've yet to make it to Brazil myself.) I'd suggest that you'd be fine - the Brazilians are so much fun you won't need to speak a common language. Almost all recommended skipping Rio and the south. Instead, they strongly urged going to Recife or Fortaleza in the north, especially for carnivale, as it is safer and much more fun....of course, most who said this were from Recife and Fortaleza.... Dave, I worked closely with many Brazilians while in Bolivia. (I’ve yet to make it to Brazil myself.)
